Since August 8th, 2022, I have been working as a Senior Systems Administrator at SMS. As a Team Lead and Product Owner, I am responsible for overseeing the technical performance of information systems, resolving issues that require architectural changes, and developing strategic solutions that reduce costs while positioning the department for future mission work.
My role involves a wide range of responsibilities, from overseeing hardware systems, analyzing, monitoring, troubleshooting, and repairing them, to performing disaster recovery. I am accountable to internal customers for the overall technical performance of the information systems, and I work to identify risks and plan risk-reduction strategies to balance performance, cost, and schedules.
One of my primary tasks is to report on progress and advances to peers, management, and stakeholders using SCRUM. I collaborate with customers and participate in cross-center discussions to find efficiencies. I also evaluate and select commercial-off-the-shelf or open-source packages for the center’s needs.
My current operations include configuration management, which involves Linux scripting (bash, sh), Ansible, and VMWare Weasel. I administer CentOS7, Rocky8, Windows (10, 16) servers and desktops, and I am proficient in working with hardware such as HP, NetApp, Synology, and Custom Hardware. I also administer SAN storage clusters, including NetApp and Synology.
As an Information System Security Officer (ISSO), I maintain a DOD-TS Clearance (DOE-Q – Top Secret equivalent) and work to maintain security plans and cyber security compliance. I also work within vault type facilities, ensuring that logs are maintained, patching is performed, and STIGs are implemented.
Overall, my experience as a Senior Systems Administrator at SMS has been challenging yet fulfilling. I have developed skills in a range of areas, from technical analysis and troubleshooting to risk management and strategic planning. I enjoy working in a dynamic environment where I can make a difference and contribute to the success of the organization.
